Jon 'n' Snow: Trippin' Together!

The constant murmur of her voice startled him. He looked sideways. There she was- in dazzling red and black clothing, her eyes only staring at him, longing, waiting. "I am coming for you my louuuuuuuvvve!" he started running towards her , arms wide-spread, as everything around him started swirling in slow-motion. It appeared as if she was moving away from him."no..No...don't go, don't go!!" he started panting, and ran faster. "Babyyyyyyyyy!!!" he cried out loud. And she stopped moving away from him, and in that moment, he forgot everything about himself. Soon, he could feel her heavy breath falling on his face, and as soon as he advanced to kiss the love of his life, she purred.

"meowww"

"Err..babe?" he was shocked. "MEOWWWWWWWW" she purred a bit more and slowly started pawing his face. Now it was his turn to run.

Miles away from this love-story, a man in his undies was drooling on his new-found bed, with his cat pawing him. The cat was probably famished. And the man-well, he was in his own world , dreaming about his love again. The cat gave one final blow and almost managed to make a D on the man's forehead, and that was enough for him to wake up.

"WHADDA--"

Jon hurled his feline in a fit. It went flying across the bed yet it still managed to land on its limbs. In style. 'A cat has nine lives' Snow purred to himself. "Why do you always have to mess my face of all the other parts of my body?" Jon screamed. "Yea right, feed me or next time I will mess with the appropriate parts of your body you useless scum!" Snow purred. Jon sighed , while trying to rub off the D. "I know buddy, I am of no good. Not in a place like this, where everything is so different....IWANNAGOHOMMMMMMMMMMME!" Jon sobbed.

                                                    *                     *                        *

Things were not this different for Jon & Snow. They too had a great life to live-girls, booze, TV , their Wii and most importantly, the huge farmhouse their eccentric uncle had left for them. Eccentric to the world, but a genius to Jon. He worshiped the man. "One day, I will take you to places where you will be the King!" he would tell young Jon. Jon did not know that his uncle was up to something similar-for real.

It was Saturday night. Jon's buddies went off to catch the latest adult movie that was a rage in town-Wife of Pi. They say it has got the never-seen-before scenes with a Tigress in water and what not. Damn tempting isn't it? But Jon decided to stay back with Snow and do certain stuffs that he always enjoyed doing when he was alone. It required skillful use of both of his hands, some screwing-unscrewing and the likes. Yes you got it right, he would 'smoke up' 2-3 joints with Snow. And Snow would just stare at him, unable to decipher what would follow-a night full of wacky philosophies , a night devoted to ruthless gorging.
But that night , Jon had other plans as well. Ever since they moved to uncle's farmhouse, they had not really explored the place properly. His uncle went off to an expedition and had never returned. Soon afterwards he was declared dead. He couldn't quite make it to the funeral, but wished he could see him off one last time. "Remember Jonny boy! The world is ruthless, the world is crazy! They call me mad, you know why? Because I am doing exactly what will make them run for their money."
Jon's uncle was an Experimental Physicist who would also wrote a cool sci-fi blog. "One day, Jonny boy, you'll see! You will be the King!"

So where were we? Ah yes Saturday night. As Jon had moved to this new place, he learned that the place is a child's dream. There were so many stuffs- gadgets, books, instruments, more books, and the likes. Jon was intrigued by the fact that his uncle managed to put all this up together. He was a bit proud as well. Ever since his parents died, his uncle was the only family he had.

That morning, Jon was checking out the place. The place was huge- it was enough for at least 20 people to live together. Snow would as usual play with his ball of wool. Jon did not really worry much about Snow. To him , he was quite a smart cat. "What is this room?" Jon exclaimed as he came across an entrance, hideously covered with a drape.

At the top of the door, there was a sign that looked suspiciously  similar to his favorite hand gesture. Yes you guessed it right again- it looked like a namaste . "Wonder when did uncle take fancy on Indian mannerisms huh!!?" he thought. He figured that the door was locked. He started jamming the lock and it wasn't giving away. It gave him aplenty of dirt on his tee, though.

Irritated, he went back a few feet and with his left forearm nudged forward, he started running towards the door. Only this time as he was about to hit the shackles of the door, Snow, his so-called 'smart cat' pounced on him from one side, and off they went  crashing on the door as it surprisingly opened normally. Jon had heard a brief *beep* sound while they crashed the door.

"Snow you stupid creature! Owww my back hurts badly."
Jon managed to sit up and took a look at his surroundings. It was full of shady posters of movies he did not watch. Chicks in skimpy clothes, fat women with guns on them, hooligans groping  women- they all were there. "What the hell are these movies?" he wondered. A typical poster of a man in disco suits caught his eyes. "Disco Dancer..hmm..who is this actor?" he thought. Suddenly, a voice came cracking from the ceiling.

"HAH HAH HAH HAH HAH!"

It was his uncle's voice. Jon was startled.

"JONNY BOY! YOU MADE IT IN HERE!" the voice screamed.

"If you are hearing this recording, then it means I have left this world for the place beyond the imagination of the people of this world! Yes my boy you are right! I have found the place- the place where you will be the king and I will be your guardian! WE WILL RULE THE LAND TOGETHER! HA HA HA HA!"

Jon looked at Snow. "Tell me Snow," he asked. " Are my eyes red?"

"purrr..."

"Am I high?!!"

"purrr...."

"I am asking questions to my cat. I am definitely high." Jon sighed. "But I don't remember smoking up! When did--" he was cut short by the recording.

" Time to join me, Jonny Boy! 3! 2! 1!"

And suddenly, Jon saw the walls of his room begin to rattle. They started folding up like window blinds and the shady movie posters started mixing up to ghastly red hues everywhere. "Whadda--?" he exclaimed, and before he knew it, he felt a massive push on his shoulders and he went flying towards the wall with that 'Disco Dancer' poster. He could hear Snow purring madly alongside him and in the next moment , the poster in from of him vanished to nothingness. It was replaced by darkness ahead, as they kept getting pushed in the forward direction. Suddenly the force behind them stopped pushing. Jon panicked. He was panting heavily and looked at his cat.

"Mew.."

Snow's pointy whiskers indicated he was scared to death. And just then, the ceiling below them gave way and they started falling.

"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA"

Jon was laughing, crying, puking, and sweating at the same time. He even farted a little. Snow was vigorously  throwing his limbs in every direction it could. Suddenly they landed on a base full of trash- in conveniently slow motion.

They woke up after a few hours. Jon got up , shocked. He looked around. It was night time. The place  looked funny. The littered roads, the smelly alleys- there was a strange harmony of filth in the air. He could not locate Snow anywhere. He started getting up and walking towards what seemed like a bar nearby.

The bar was shadier than he had expected. It seemed to be full of dopeheads. 'I am a disco dancer!' was playing in full volume, though he couldn't figure out the rest of the lyrics. And then he saw something that blew his balls away.

Snow was sitting on a high dais on what seemed to be like a richly decorated throne. There were a gazillions of attendants around him  , taking care of his whiskers like a newly crowned king. All of a sudden, Snow's attention went towards Jon. "Mew!!!" it shrieked and started moving its paws in Jon's direction.Everyone suddenly looked at Jon.

"OUR KING HAS DESCENDED!" they all cried in unison. They all got hold of Jon , took him up on their shoulders and placed him on an even bigger throne next to Snow. Jon got confused. But then he saw two pretty ladies who were apparently the king's official escorts, and all his confusion went away.

"Welcome to Merrytopia O King! I am BS,your humble Prime Minister" a middle-aged man came forward from among the crowd.

"Err..Hello BS.." Jon was finding it hard to control his laughter. "H-how are you?"
"Finest as an old wine, your Majesty!"
"Good good. Er..do you know anything about my uncle?"
"I do, your Majesty!"
"Well then take me to him!"
"I would your Majesty. But first I must lay down the rules of this land that a King must follow."

BS took out a scroll, opened it, took a USB drive out , dropped the scroll on the ground, took out his tablet from his robe, and plugged the USB in.

"(ahem).. O King of Merrytopia,
Live Long and Prosper! (brief applause follows)
For the sake of taking over as the King of this land, a king must follow the Golden Rule: Impose one law on this land. Only after that will he be able to rule as a king."

"And what if I don't follow the orders?" Jon quipped.
"You cannot do that O King.." BS said calmly.
"Why not? I can just refuse to do this! Coming here was not my choice at the first place!" Jon protested.

"What's done is done. You must follow the rules. That's how Merrytopia works. If you fail to do so, you shall be put to the dungeons where you would be made to watch Ram Gopal Verma movies."
"Who the hell is Ram Gopal Verma?"
The whole crowd gasped in unison on hearing this.
"You don't know RGV? You don't know nothing about Bollywood?!!!"
"Err..I know Hollywood..where is Bollywood?"
The whole crowd gasped in unison once again.

"Bollywood! The Hindi Film Industry! That's in India! They make the coolest of movies! We survive on their songs, their dances are our folk dances, their tragedies is the reason for our grief..BOLLYWOOD IS THE WAY OF OUR LIVES!" BS was almost choking with emotions.

"Ha ha. What crap.." Jon murmured.
"WHAT DID YOU SAY YOUR MAJESTY?!!"
"I said we should CLAP!" Jon was beginning to understand those shady posters at his uncle's room now. He saw that playing along was the only way out.

"Alright, if I must follow the rule, then very well."
The crowd became expectant.
"So tell me O Wise King, what law would you impose on us?" BS was excited.

Jon cleared his throat, looked around, and smiled.
"The law that I shall pass is: Legalize Marijuana!"

The crowd was puzzled. Snow gave a brief "mew" while looking at Jon with disbelief.

                                                        *                     *                        *

Weeks passed. The people embraced the new law. Now what happened is that people started getting high all the time. They stopped giving a shit about anything in their world except arranging for and rolling the joints. Philosophical opinions started flooding everywhere. Some would agree on to an opinion and the next moment an outsider would come and oppose, and suddenly everyone would start opposing the theories.

Jon observed that administration was getting out of hand. Even BS would now talk nothing but BS. Jon couldn't believe that even Snow would show up with red eyes at times. Weed used to be Jon's way of life but now, it seemed that his law was not fully accurate. He needed to do something about it.

"I want to change the law."  he called BS for a counsel one day.
"You..haha how do I put it..heeh..cannot!" BS had already stopped adding 'Your Majesty' a few days back.
"Are you high, as we speak?"
"No no Jonny Boy I am not!"
"Then why would you-- wait what did you call me?!"

"Jonny Boy!"

Jon was surprised and confused. He had his doubts initially about BS but power and freedom had blinded him. BS gave out a crackle of laughter, a loud and wide laughter. A familiar laughter.

"This is why I had to create this world of mine! Our world would not take me, so I wanted to escape!" BS began his tale , which you all must be dying to know by now.

"On my journey with my experiments, I had finally found a way to a parallel universe. Only that it was in ruins, as if it was abandoned by its people. I was happy to find the resources of this world-all at my disposal, but after a while, I started getting bored. Bored because, I missed conversations with another human being. I was upset about this, and realized something should be done! Then I thought , why not get some people from our world, who wanted to escape , to break free, and to live as equals, without caring much for survival.

And I knew just the people to pick. I took up all the slum-dwellers of every populated countries of the world. This might sound outrageous , Jonny Boy, but trust me, nobody cares if a certain amount of these low lives suddenly disappear from the face of the Earth! So the plan was perfect- I was to give these people a new place to live, a new world where they would face no limitations, and of course I planned to rule this world, along with you."

Jon did not know what to say. Snow purred a little.

"Why do you look so startled? Did you not always wanted to live in a place like this?!!!"

"NO Uncle! I have my friends back home! I have a life that's full of excitement!"
"Oh c'mon, your life blows. I have seen how you live- borrowing cash from your friends, roaming here n there, trying to score a chick but ending up with your Cat at the end of the day. You call that an exciting life?!"
"I don't care! However bad it is, it is MY life! So I can choose how to lead it!"
"Well, now that you are here, you cannot go back. Because I haven't yet designed a way to get back to the other side..."
Jon wanted to punch his uncle on his throat.
".... and since you have revolted, it is important that you are put away somewhere, where you cannot create any problems..." BS smirked.
" You cannot do that! And wait a minute, why could I not recognize you all this while? Why not on the day I came here?"
BS smiled.
"Because, I had mixed a 'synthesized' form of weed in the air of my farmhouse by the vents. You see I got inspired from that 'Balam Pichkari' song from that  latest Bollywood movie. So anyone who entered that place would unknowingly get high and stay that way. I had developed the specimen in such a way that it would not interfere with your day-to-day functioning, but if you encountered any illusion , your mind would go on a trip , getting you high. So the illusion would work as a trigger to get you high. Hence I had those illusions put in place when you had entered the 'Portal Room' . Those Bollywood movie posters, they have immense effect on getting you high, you see!"

"Whadda-- and stop with your Bollywood references already!" Jon was angered. Suddenly, he saw Snow pouncing towards his uncle. This is it. He had to make a run for it. As BS fell on the ground, Jon grabbed Snow under his arm and ran away from the bar that now masqueraded as a fully functional Palace.

Now you'd wonder, 'Dude! That's bullcrap! How could he run away so easily? Why would BS not do something to make it difficult for them? What BS are you feeding us!!'  well you see, weed was legal in that land. And when that happens...need I say more?

So Jon & Snow ran . They tried to hide, to stay in disguise for days. They begged , borrowed, stole, and tried doing whatever they could from getting caught. This is how they landed in this single-room apartment.

*back to the present*

"...IWANNAGOHOMMMMMMMMMMME!" Jon sobbed. He knew his efforts were futile. The only thing that he failed to understand is that his uncle had elaborated everything in detail, except for the Portal Room. Could it be because it was a weak link? The Achilles' Heel of his uncle's plan? "What a madman.." he murmured. Suddenly he realized, he wasn't high anymore. He checked Snow's eyes. He wasn't high as well. This actually gave him some motivation. "Perhaps the hunger...wears off the effects ?" he wondered. " I don't believe the fact that uncle did not develop a way back to our world. He is crazy but he is not impractical for all I know, Snow."

"purrr.."

"And so, the portal to the other side has to be here somewhere! THAT'S IT! We have to find the portal Snow!"

"purrr.."

"Yeah I know I  am in my undies. Let's get covered up and start searching!" Jon was determined. And in few minutes, they took off.

Jon roamed in the streets of Merrytopia. The streets looked highly under-developed. Obviously, the people here did not care how they lived, where they lived. They just wanted to live as equals, get their hands on day-to-day resources and stay merry. Also, the whole city looked extremely bland, except the bar-cum-palace areas. They looked -how to put it- very colorful. Almost like those posters that he had seen earlier.

And he failed to understand when did his uncle pick up this liking for Bollywood movies. "Could be when he went to Asia to collect people.." he kept wondering as it suddenly struck him. He had seen a poster of Disco Dancer, the one similar to the poster in the Portal Room. Only that this poster was there at a public theater- which would remain jam-packed day and night.  " They screen the same movie everyday, yet these weirdos keep visiting the place like pilgrims. " He tried to test his theory. With a convincing disguise( he did not need much work as the guards were stoned) , he entered the movie theater premises. Snow was tucked inside his robes, and he pushed the swarm of dopeheads as he inched nearer to the poster. He was blinded with hope so much so that he failed to notice that it is getting too easy for him and Snow to escape.

Back in our world, in the farmhouse, Jon's friends were trying hard to get Jon back from the 'trip' .

A Naval Tale

Here is another entry to a contest where I need to conjure up something on the following topic:

After World War III, the female survivors decide that, as men caused the war and did most of the fighting, it is simply too dangerous to allow them to be in control of the governments any longer. Men are banned from government and military service and, after a few years, banned from voting, having an education or having a job outside the home. A young boy, depressed by his limited prospects at home, decides to pose as a girl so he can join the navy.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Disclaimer: This story may end up hurting sentiments of sexists. However, I would please, please request you to note the fact that the topic is sexist in itself, and hence writing a a non-sexist story on a sexist topic is, well, beyond my scope. If you are a sexist and do not like sexist stories based on sexist plots, you should skip reading the rest of the post.

I was a bit circumspect, given that I have to write a story involving women, navy, wars, and future - four topics that I am blissfully unaware of.

Now that I have mentioned 'sex' seven times in the paragraph above, my tension has eased off a bit. Sex eases stress, I've been told. Let me set the ball rolling now.

***

Srinivasan was a fraud.

When you come across the word 'fraud', you probably get an image of someone who looks like an insurance agent, carries a battered leather folio, wears buttoned-up full-sleeved cheap shirts that are not tucked inside the ancient grayish trousers, and adorns a permanent four-day salt-and-pepper stubble.

No, Srinivasan was not a fraud in that mould. He was a fraud with class. He looked suave, snazzy, sexy, stylish, smooth, sleek, sensuous, and several other similar adjectives that begin with an S. These, however, weren't qualities that Srinivasan was proud of. He knew that the S's were unnecessary attributes, and though they brought him women on a frequent basis, he knew they were useless qualities unless he stuck to the real s-adjective.

Smart.

Smartness was Srinivasan's forte. He could outsmart any person he knew, and we are not talking rocket science or advanced topology here. He also specialised in impersonating people, which, when combined with smartness, became a tool potent enough to hoodwink any person.

Only that it was different this time. Very different.

He had got the better of a cohort of people. Women, actually.

***

It was, well, a long tale. To cut things short, after the two-year long World War III had ended, the women took their time off from pedicures and eyebrow-plucking, and took to mundane events - including administration. They took a decision - despite vehement protests from men - to strip men of all their rights.

It did not help that the male population had gone down drastically after the war, thereby resulting in a protest that turned out to be as feeble as a muted limbless chihuahua on sedatives. They were captured and shown their place.

They had to be confined to home and household duties; they were deprived of education of all sorts; they were banned from entering Government and military services; and they could be used by the fairer sex in the most unfair of fashions - which was when the heterosexual women contemplated reproduction or watched pre-World War porn.

Things became the toughest for those who were used to the pre-World War comforts, or at least the equality. Srinivasan was one of them. He simply knew he had to find a way around this. He thought hard, rehearsed with a passion, and eventually found a perfect solution.

He was so excited that he had almost shouted out 'Eureka!', but abstained when he was reminded of the horrible music that accompanies the filling of a bottle from an Aquaguard machine.

***

He had taken out time to buy some apparel to turn up for the interview. Now, given the fact that he could not leave the house being dressed as a man (online shopping was, of course, banned for men), there was only one option left.

He had to leave the house as a woman to shop for a woman.

Economists and others have classified concepts like these as vicious circles. Vicious circles weren't good enough to hold back Srinivasan, though: not only circles, he was good at going around vicious squares, triangles, rectangles, in fact, vicious geometry boxes. He could have picked the pocket of a vicious Euclid and a vicious Pythagoras and would have made them blame each other. He was that kind of a person.

Anyway, he had stolen his mistress' lipstick and a few strange-looking tubes that rested innocently next to her bathroom mirror. He had read the instructions carefully, applied each and every one, and had put them back.

The woman at the supermarket had not suspected him. He bought clothes, undergarments, and a basic collection of cosmetics. He had a checklist with him, and had ticked the items one by one until he was satisfied. He loved checklists. Had this been an earlier era, he might have worked as an HR and used phrases like 'paradigm shift'.

Sigh.

He still required a false identity, though. That was easily obtained. He had felt a sudden warm gushing of blood down his veins as he slit that 21-year's throat down the dark alleyway down to the barn. He had murdered before, but this had been different. This had been revenge against injustice. He had found perverse pleasure as he had watched the girl's voiceless body go down in silent spasms, only to be still afterwards.

Stripping the girl, slicing her into bits, and throwing them to the pigs' pen had been rather easy afterwards. The good things about pigs is the fact that they eat anything and are perpetually hungry, somewhat like politicians.

He had obtained her AADHAAR card, and putting all his experiences of his days of faking passports into use, he had managed to replace her name with his. It had been a cakewalk after that.

***

Getting through had been easy. Sharing room with ladies, showering with them, watching them in their thongs, and getting them to brush their flesh against his during one of those booze-parties had been worth the experience. Controlling his lust had not been, though.

He had to remind himself on a consistent basis that he had been at the navy with a mission. It had been about getting back at them. It had been about getting out of that hellhole. It had been having a life, for a change.

No, he had to get over his lust.

The women, on the other hand, had been quite adventurous at the islands. They had come back tipsy, smelling of stale tobacco, cheap alcohol, and stories of male escorts who they had paid to fulfill various fantasies. "A sailor has a husband in every port", they joked.

Other than the lust bit, though, everything had been manageable. He had waited anxiously for the war to happen - but the world had seemed to be at peace, making the entire concept of armies and navies redundant. Bored, he had often spent his evening on the deck - sparkling like mirrors since the women had taken over - and staring at the sky wondering why people at the navy did not wear navy-blue uniforms and other similar important philosophical aspects of life.

Life wasn't bad for a sailor, after all.

***

Then after what it seemed like ages, it happened.

The sirens blared at dawn, waking everyone up at the first sight of daylight. Women with their brassieres peeking from the loosely tied dressing-gowns ran barefoot up to the deck. The woman on patrol had spotted something.

It was another ship. The gunshots in the distance filled the sky, now turning into a peaceful light blue from the dazzling red of the daybreak. The Sun was momentarily eclipsed by the incessant smoke of the ammunition, and when it all cleared up, they could see the flag at a distance.

It was the Jolly Roger. Only in pink. The ship was full of mean-looking girls who had made a sincere effort to dress up like meanies, but had ended up resembling cute pop singers instead. The white-and-pink designer tops and carefully ripped jeans did not work, despite the immaculate bandanas.

They just did not look like pirates. They simply did not.

They roared in unison, though - with guns in hand. It was evident that the roar was a well-rehearsed one. They roared again, and the pirate ship raced towards their naval counterpart in a straight, somewhat cautious motion.

The women (and the man we all know by now) had got dressed by now. The guns were out. They licked their lips in anticipation. What chance did the pirates have against a fully stacked naval vessel?

They leaned on the deck, and shot approximately when the pirate ship got close enough for the strong wind to carry a mild whiff of pirate perfume.

The pirate girls shot back, but it was an uneven battle. The navy had the strongest of weapons and months of training behind them, and simply blew the pirates away. Not a single girl survived on the other ship. The naval ship got closer, and the girls in uniform made their way to the other ship walking on the plank that the navy people typically use.

The ammunition was seized, and so were the documents of the ship, along with a few pink diaries. The pirates had apparently been brought up with the idea that pirates always wrote diaries, and had gone for a bulk discount offer, but didn't really get past the "Dear Diary, Now that I'm a pirate, I don't think he loves me anymore" bit.

The navy, obviously, consisted of serious women who meant business. They ransacked the little pirate ship, confiscated all they could, and stole perfumes and lingerie with the gruff seriousness of walruses on diets. Then they walked along the plank back to their ship.

Srinivasan was happy. He had just fought his first war, had crushed the opponents, had managed to acquire a shampoo and a conditioner, along with a diary with little red hearts and the name Ravi written on almost all the pages. Some of the hearts also had rather menacing red arrows piercing through them.

He looked down at his loot fascinatingly. Then he felt something hard poking at his neck. Before he could react his hands were tied behind his back and were cuffed. Unseen hands used something to cover his face, and held tightly, gagging him, choking him...

And then he remembered no more.

***

He woke up on the deck. He insides churned with hunger. His shirt was ripped from his body, and so were his trousers. He was tied to a pole with his hands behind his back, and strong ropes virtually made him immobile. He looked ridiculous in his female underwear.

The Captain walked up to him and slapped him across his face.

"I know why you did this. You also knew what was at stake, didn't you?"

Srinivasan nodded.

Think, he told himself. His hands were tied, and he could not move. Could he talk himself out of this? Smooth talk, after all, had worked for him in the past.

"Look, I really admire the power of the Female. I just wanted to..."

The captain smirked. The crew roared in unison in an infectious laughter.

It's not working. It won't work. They're not the gullible ones he had picked up by the dozens in his heydays. They have been trained.

The Captain held a pistol at his temple. He shivered as the cold metal pressed against his bare skin.

So this was it.

"Anything you want to know before I'm over with this?"

Srinivasan gulped. He did. He did want to know what had given it away.

"How did you figure out?"

A broad grin spread across The Captain's face.

"Oh, that. It was simple. When those sluts attacked today morning, all of us went up to the deck to find out what was going on. Then we got ready and returned with our guns, remember?"

Srinivasan stared at her quizzically.

"All of us - yes, myself included - had glanced at the shiny surface of the deck to see whether we looked all right in our nightgowns, or whether our hairdo was fine when we had dressed up hurriedly. You were the only one who didn't. That, well, was simply not being female."

Those were the last words Srinivasan heard.

Cheers to life !!

Cheers! He said, just to check the level of spirit
Cheers! They clanged, for everything this night they inherit

The wisdom to know the right from wrong
The art of keeping people where they belong

How to comprehend when not a single word is spoken
How to fix when it all appears broken

Where to fall and how to grow
What to keep and what to throw?

Whom to hold and for how long
What are the lyrics for your life’s title song?

You come in clean and let life etch
Everything you learn and all your letch

With that stage set, its time you start winning
Cheers to life and a new beginning!

Arjuna by Anuja Chandramouli

Blurb :

Arjuna is the immortal tale of one of Indias greatest heroes. These pages retell in riveting detail the story of the Pandava Warrior-Prince who has captured the imagination of millions across centuries. This is the intense and human story of his loves, friendship, ambitions, weaknesses and follies, as well as his untimely death and revival, his stint as a eunuch, and the innermost reaches of his thoughts. Told in a refreshingly modern and humourous style and set against the staggering backdrop of the Mahabharata. Arjunas story appeals equally to the average, discerning reader and the scholar. It spans the epic journey from before his birth, when omens foretold his greatness, across the fabled, wondrous landscape that was his life.

Review:

Disclaimer: I do always refer to the names of Indian characters without the suffix ‘a’. It is and will be Arjun for me, not Arjuna.

Mythology has always been the Achilles’ Heel for me. I have been trying to comprehend the epics since childhood through bland text books and the legendary television serials, especially Mahabharat. It has been mostly futile, though. As if Valmiki and Ved Vyas had conspired eons ago to confuse me with their magnanimous works. It is because of this confusion that I still pick up mythological books, to test myself.

Anuja Chandramouli, the author of this book had asked me very graciously to read and review it for her. I’d be lying if I said that I started reading without expectations. I had presumed the book would be unusual, perhaps presenting Arjun in a different light, assess him from a different angle, or even let him speak out his life to the mere mortals ages later. Alas, I was disappointed. The book is an abridged Mahabharat in English with interesting trivia and anecdotes, which are often left out in the popular versions of the epic. It is not fiction, in my opinion. Anuja has been true to the original text, the stories, the characters, their circumstances. The figments of her imagination are much less in quantity than what would have made it a great book.

All of us, rather most of us have read the Mahabharat in some form or the other. Most readers are already aware of the characters and the plethora of sub-plots intertwined. Arjun is one of the most important protagonists of the Pandav clan. His brothers and mother have been fighting for their life and royal rights of the Kuru dynasty throughout the saga. Their is Yudhishthir – the righteous one, Draupadi – the elusive damsel, Kunti – the quintessential mother, Duryodhan – the villain, and so on. Arjun was termed as the most prolific warrior (arguably, Karn being the other). If Arjun’s illustrious life were to be exclusively sketched, it should have had a lot of other ingredients. I can’t help but compare this book to the rare other contemporary ones on Mahabharat characters that scored more in my sheet. Anuja has wrapped the ancient story in a delectable christmas box of fluent writing.

What I liked most – her choice of words and flair in writing. I’m not shy to admit that I learnt quite a number of new words from her. She has written chapters one after another seamlessly. I am much impressed with the form of this book, not the content. It is like a tried and tested common dish served in fancy tableware with much fanfare. It is recommended for ones who haven’t had a chance to read the Mahabharat. Having witnessed Anuja’s panache in this book, I am most certain to expect a lot more from her next.

Much thanks for the book Anuja. It was a refresher course in Mahabharat for me.

My Rating: 2.75/5

Drawing her creative inspiration from the epics timeless track record of sustenance through centuries of retelling, Anuja chose to debut as a storyteller with the immortal and eternally captivating saga of Arjuna, the non pareil hero. Putting together episodes from Arjunas life (some well known, others relatively obscure), gleaned through years of painstaking research and then presented in a seamless narrative with the uninhibited panache and style of a 21st century writer, has been an immensely satisfying and self-actualising endeavour for this New Age Indian classicist.

Cheers To Life

We walked a hundred miles,
I and my life,
Togetherness unravelled,
Along with the journey.
We walked through several thorny paths,
My bare feet bled, relentlessly.
Several storms came,
And went off devastating us, my life.
And, left us with sordidness.
We walked through the dirty trails,
We walked through the unsoiled too,
We got filth on us,
We got scoured too.
We often lost our ways,
And seldom returned on track.
We got sometimes blamed,
Sometimes, blessed we were.
Countless joys there were,
Numerous miseries too.
Yet, I say it, my life

Cheers to you!

Revisiting the past

The rain, the ebbing and falling of the paddy, the grandma stories and many more situations comes into reality once he visits his past and finds out how his life changed since the days, that passed by.
The distant horizon looks untruly far and seems to be a place out of reach. The hot scorching sun seems to be burning away everything on its way.  Even after hours of walking, the horizon still remains the same; maybe he can hire a bus or rent a bike to reach the place.
But wait!!  What is this place?
He has been walking for hours, without noticing that it is not the place that he stays or the place he has ever visited.
So what is this place altogether?
Now, Arjun takes into account of the surrounding around him. It doesn't seem to be a pavement that he is walking but it is rather much more comforting.
What???-he exclaims to his wildest amazement it is the sky he has been walking on for a last few hours. Bewildered and confused of the world he is in, runs in the direction of the sparkling light.
It has been quite a while he has been running and his feet could no longer carry him any further. He stops running and collapses of the clouds. And it leads to simultaneous outburst of thunder and lightning.
The sudden lightning and thunder wakes him up, only to find him on his bed sweating. It has been raining in this part of the world for a few days along with the strong winds. He clouds seemed to move faster than and faster with the winds blowing them away.
He tries hard to remember what had happened to him in his sleep but without much success. He makes his coffee and get on the bed and takes a sip of his coffee.
Waking up in the bed at the middle of the night, to have fallen asleep in the middle of his working hours, have been happening for some days now, after the deadly accident, which nearly killed him.
The doctors declared him brain dead in the hospitals. But, on his funeral day he jumps out of his coffin and gives a wave of shock and frightens everyone in the funeral.

Ever since then he has been feeling dizziness and has found something as a broken link and emptiness, as he finds it hard to remember of what he dreamt. It seems as if the delusions of the past have found a way to his present, and he finds it hard to connect he broken link with the present.
The night is long and it is long before the first rays of the sun shines in the eastern horizon with the sweet chirping of the birds. The coffee and the warm bed lower his adrenalin flow and he his back to normal.

Arjun relaxes on his bed and starts reading his newly delivered novel “Inferno”, by Dan Brown. It hasn’t been long he has fallen asleep, before he suddenly finds being caught in a wind storm, with not less than a velocity of 70-80 km/hr, engraving he rice sacks kept in the fields to be kept in the warehouse. “Bring in the covers, fast it is going to rain heavily today”, shouts his grandfather from a distance. Everyone in the nearby run to and fro to save the rice sacks form being wet. The rain started after the entire heap had been covered and is now safe from being wet and wasted.
Now he realises that he has been transported 10 years to his past. The hours dreaming of a place in the clouds, was a story being narrated by his grandma 10 years ago. And he felt as if he is in the imaginary place created by grandma 10 years ago, so that he goes to sleep.
Back in his bedroom he is smiling, dreaming of those place and the moments cherished.
Arjun is again awakened by the knock on the door and the alarm ticking. The dream seemed to fade away at this instance and he felt to be taken away from his village.
It was a Sunday and the knock on the door was the milkman. It is already 8 o’clock in the morning, but was till dark outside. He was felling sleepy and it was cool outside, and the accident has caused him to doze off more often than he did before it.
It is a bright sunshine and the aerial view is amazing. He finds himself on a tree plucking ripe
mangoes and eating them too. The ebbing and falling of the golden paddy and the lovely essence of the flowers in the garden nearby add to the beauty of the place. The cow herds, the boats near the riverside, kids jumping into the river, and the golden sunshine gives you a treat to your eyes and a peace of mind. This is only to be found on the country side, far away from the hustle bustle of the city.
Arjun’s brother comes running and shouting, “A group of monkeys are approaching, get down from the tree.”
In a hurry he jumps off and finds himself on a ship running after his mom. He was on a ship that came from Malaysia, to deliver the goods and in exchange to take coal.
It had been 10 years since he had ever gone a ship, and he was a kid back then, and was amazed to see the length and breadth of the ship. It was quite long and big even. He followed his uncle with the captain of the ship into the vast room of switches. Arjun, accidentally switches on a switch which starts of something and it blew an alarm. Thanks to Captain who switched it off, who was closely monitoring the curiosity of the young mind, in search of something new on the ship and to find out which switch, switches on what.
It was fun playing with the switches and the Malaysian toy the Captain gifted him.
The amazing past he had, had been a wonderful world. He wakes up in the morning just to find that the past he had visited was just a dream. The past and the present of his are altogether two different worlds. It was those moments of the past that made him of what he is in the present.

“Past is a good place to visit but definitely not a place to stay”, he says to himself. But he wishes to continue visiting his past only in his dreams.

3047 AD : Troy

3032 AD
"Whoa! Robert we did it, it’s amazing we made a profound discovery in our solar system. It truly does give a deep insight into science," said Kurt the administrator of Space-X.
Robert was the deputy administrator of this private firm which had advanced miles ahead in the field of space research compared to NASA and other government organisations. Just a few hundred years Space-X had made Mars habitable for Human settlement by inducing climatic conditions similar to that of Earth.
"Yes we did it. It’s a combined effort of our team, without them we never would have found that wormhole." said Robert.
"Yes, and to think that there would be a wormhole between the planet Mars and the asteroid belt is truly astounding" said Kurt.
"Kurt you know how eager I am to discover new colonies of life outside earth and get to know their culture and existence and I truly believe this opportunity could be used to the fullest and explore the unexplored. We are lucky that this is a traversable wormhole and space travel could be done through it." Robert asked Kurt with extreme delight in his eyes.
"A wonderful opportunity indeed." Kurt replied. "Considering that and the fact that it is impossible for life travel to take place through that wormhole we must make a satellite which could send radio waves through the worm hole."

3035 AD
"Pandora 619 is is ready for the launch Robert," Kurt said cheerfully.
"Let's begin the countdown."

3045 AD
"Kurt, there is a serious problem at hand, the connection with Pandora 619 is cut and cannot be re-established."
"It’s alright, we covered most of the part of planet Redik through Pandora 619, we will find an alternate solution and even inform the situation to the Garganians who have their planet Gargan near the satellite. Maybe they could help us as they have been helping us by lending their technological marvels over the past few years since we made our first contact." said Kurt filled with hope.

3047 AD
"Kurt, sorry to disturb you at this moment but our watch-station 4 has just sent an emergency message, it says that an unidentified object is heading towards Earth. I’ve even contacted Gargans, but they denied it being theirs. It is approximately 5 days away from earth." said Robert confused.
"All right I will look into the matter." Kurt said calmly.

The following day Kurt seemed to be rejoicing.
"Cheers! I am very happy that Pandora 619 is returned. We could possibly use it to test Redik's soil samples. I even asked the watch-station to conduct an X-ray scan of Pandora 619 but it seems there is no danger."

That night Kurt returned back to his home overlooking the Martian Delta. Suri, his daughter, was eagerly waiting for her dad.
"Dad, look what I found while I was browsing the SMAI today. On Earth there was a lost city of Atlantis which was discovered 500 years ago. It was created by the survivors of Troy who wanted to live at peace after its destruction because of the Trojan Horse." Suri paused. "Dad what is a Trojan Horse?"

"My girl, the Trojan Horse was a way of deception used by the Greeks who wanted to win against Troy in a war. The Greeks hid in the wooden horse and the army of Troy thought of it to be the gift of victory and took it inside. When inside at night the Greeks crept out and called in reinforcements and slaughtered the army of Troy. This was the Trojan Horse," said Kurt thoughtfully.

"Dad, this is cheating." Suri was sad.
Kurt then began to contemplate.
He then stomped his foot and quickly headed towards the Space-X office and called Carter the man in-charge at watch-station 4.
"Carter, its me Kurt, sorry to disturb you at this time of the night, but could you tell me how far is Pandora 619?"
"3 days sir," replied Carter.
"Could you please take an electron beam scan of Pandora 619?"
"Right away sir."

The next day Kurt was holding the reports. He was puzzled.
Holding the reports in his hand Kurt called the Extra Terrestrial Space Force Captain Norman Scruze.
"Norman I want Pandora 619 to be exterminated immediately. And please make sure it is done as soon as possible" Kurt said.
"Sure sir" Norman replied.
After 13 hours the the whole sky is blinded by a white light.
Kurt arrived to the unit and smiled at his staff. Everyone including Robert were stupefied by this phenomenon.
"I am glad the report saved us Kurt." - Robert remarked.
"It didn't, Robert. The reports were negative. The Garganians sent back the satellite Pandora 619 with loads of anti-matter which if it would have made contact with any planet would have lead to total annihilation. These reports provide us the proof that our technology is still far inferior. We need to figure out their future plans. They are nothing less than demi-gods who are gearing up for a war. This was just their Trojan Horse."
